Before Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios made Divinity: Original Sin 2. Playing it feels like a prototype for much of what came later: elemental surfaces that react to spells, companions with origin stories, and co-op for up to four. The main difference is the rules system, which is Larian's own rather than Dungeons & Dragons.

If you loved Baldur's Gate 3's environmental tactics, start here.

Turn-based tactics or real-time combat?

Many BG3 fans want more turn-based battles. Divinity: Original Sin 2, Wasteland 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are turn-based by design. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Pillars of Eternity II let you choose between real-time-with-pause and turn-based modes.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect use real-time action. If you mainly loved companions and story, that may not matter; if the tactical battles were the highlight, choose a turn-based game.

Turn-based combat also changes how you play with a group. In co-op, each player controls their own characters and takes turns, which works well for friends who like to talk through a plan. Real-time games are faster but less forgiving if one person wants to stop and think. If your Baldur's Gate 3 nights were social, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the safest choice because it was designed with co-op in mind from the start.

Companions, romance and reactive stories

BioWare's games are known for companions. Mass Effect Legendary Edition lets your choices carry across three games, and Dragon Age: Inquisition has a large cast with romances. Disco Elysium takes a different approach: your own skills argue with you as inner voices, making it one of the most unusual RPGs ever written.

Every pick is PEGI 16 or 18

Baldur's Gate 3 is PEGI 18 in the PEGI database, with Violence, Bad language and Sex descriptors. Most picks here are also PEGI 18: Divinity: Original Sin 2, both Dragon Age games, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Disco Elysium, Wasteland 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Pillars of Eternity II and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are PEGI 16. Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Wasteland 3 also carry a Gambling descriptor, and Disco Elysium and Pathfinder include Drugs. These are adult games, so this page is not aimed at younger players. Our choosing guide explains the descriptors.

Time commitment: these are long games

Like Baldur's Gate 3, nearly every game here is a long commitment, and several are huge. Disco Elysium and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are comparatively focused. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Pillars of Eternity II are among the longest.

If your time is limited, our guide to finishing your backlog has tips on choosing and pacing long games. You may also like games like The Witcher 3 for story-led open worlds.

Where to play these RPGs, and how to choose between them

Baldur's Gate 3 is on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and most picks here follow a similar pattern. A few older games, including Pillars of Eternity II and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, are listed for PS4 and Xbox One consoles rather than the newer generation in the PEGI database. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is notable for also being listed for Nintendo Switch 2.

To choose, think about the moment in Baldur's Gate 3 you enjoyed most. If it was a perfectly planned turn in combat, choose Divinity: Original Sin 2 or Wasteland 3. If it was a conversation where a dice roll changed everything, choose Disco Elysium. If it was your companions' loyalty missions and romances, choose Mass Effect Legendary Edition or Dragon Age: Inquisition. If it was building an unusual character, choose Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
