Short-session games: good picks for 10 to 30 minutes

Not every game needs an evening. These are built around runs, rounds or levels that fit into a lunch break, a commute or the gap before dinner, and still leave you feeling you got somewhere.

The shortlist

Each card shows platforms, the PEGI rating as published, typical session length, and which traits it shares.

  1. Hades II

    PEGI 12PCPS5XboxSwitchSwitch 2Short sessions
    Editorial view

Each run through the underworld is a self-contained attempt, and the story advances whether you win or lose, so a single evening attempt still moves things on. A God Mode option makes runs gradually easier if you want the story without the grind.

How it differs: It asks for focus during a run, so it suits a dedicated half-hour more than a distracted ten minutes.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  2. Balatro

    PEGI 12PCPS5XboxSwitchSwitch 2iOSAndroidShort sessions
    Editorial view

A run is a sequence of poker-hand rounds against rising score targets, and you can stop between any two of them. Losing simply means starting a fresh run with new ideas about which combinations work.

How it differs: It is about planning and maths rather than reflexes, so it feels calmer than most short-session picks.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  3. Vampire Survivors

    PEGI 12PCPS5XboxSwitchiOSAndroidShort sessions
    Editorial view

A standard stage lasts up to 30 minutes and your weapons fire on their own, so the only real input is movement and choosing upgrades. Gold earned in a run buys permanent upgrades, which makes even a short failed attempt worthwhile.

How it differs: Its screen gets very busy late in a run, which some people find hard to follow.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  4. Slay the Spire

    PEGI 7PCPS5XboxSwitchiOSAndroidMedium sessions
    Editorial view

You climb a tower one card battle at a time, and the game saves between rooms, so you can put it down mid-run and pick it up later. Every enemy shows what it intends to do next, which makes each fight a small, readable puzzle.

How it differs: A full climb can run past an hour, so it is a run spread across sittings rather than one sitting.

    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  5. Celeste

    PEGI 7PCPS5XboxSwitchShort sessions
    Editorial view

Screens are short, deaths cost seconds and you respawn instantly, so a few minutes can still mean several cleared rooms. Its Assist Mode lets you slow the game or add invincibility if a section is blocking the story.

How it differs: It is a story game with a beginning and an end, rather than an endlessly replayable loop.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  6. Dead Cells

    PEGI 16PCPS5XboxSwitchiOSAndroidShort sessions
    Editorial view

Fast action runs through a castle whose layout reshuffles each time, with weapons and routes unlocked permanently between attempts. Early biomes take only minutes, so a quick run is always possible.

How it differs: It is rated PEGI 16 for arcade violence with blood, and the difficulty climbs steeply.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  7. Rocket League

    PEGI 3PCPS5XboxSwitchShort sessions
    Editorial view

A standard match lasts five minutes, which makes it one of the easiest games to fit around other plans. It is free to play and supports split-screen on one console.

How it differs: Online matches against strangers can feel tense, and leaving mid-match is frowned on in ranked play.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  8. Baba Is You

    PEGI 3PCSwitchiPhoneiPadShort sessions
    Editorial view

Each level is a single screen where you push word blocks to rewrite the rules, so one puzzle can be a five-minute sitting. Getting stuck is part of it: you can leave a puzzle and try another on the map.

How it differs: Some puzzles take much longer than five minutes to crack, so a session can end without a solution.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  9. Dorfromantik

    PEGI 3PCSwitchShort sessions
    Editorial view

You place hexagonal landscape tiles to grow a countryside, with no enemies and no timer between moves. A game ends when your tile stack runs out, which gives a natural end point.

How it differs: It is gentle by design, so it will not scratch an itch for action.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Quick restart
    • Progress that survives a loss
    • Clear stopping points
    • Low setup
  10. Monument Valley

    PEGI 3iOSAndroidSwitchPS5Short sessions
    Editorial view

Short levels of impossible-geometry architecture that you rotate and slide to make a path, usually finished in minutes. The rating is PEGI 3 and there is very little text to read.

How it differs: The whole game is short, so it is more of an evening or two than a long-running habit.

What makes a game fit a 20-minute window

The length of a game matters far less than the length of its loop: the cycle of play you repeat. A 100-hour game can still suit short sessions if the loop is a five-minute match or a single run. A 10-hour story game can be awkward if its chapters last 90 minutes with no save in between.

So when you are judging a game for short sessions, look for three things. First, how long one round, run or level usually takes. Second, whether you can save or suspend mid-way. Third, how much you need to remember to pick it back up. Games with a quick restart and a visible goal win on all three.

Store pages rarely list loop length, but trailers and the game's own description often give it away. Words such as run, match, round or level usually point to bite-sized play.

Roguelikes, rounds and runs: the three shapes of short play

Most short-session games fall into one of three shapes.

  • Runs (Hades II, Dead Cells, Vampire Survivors, Balatro): you start fresh each time, but unlocks carry forward. They are easy to stop between runs, and harder to stop during one.
  • Rounds or matches (Rocket League, Among Us): fixed-length contests, often online. They have the clearest stopping points, but leaving mid-match lets your team down.
  • Levels (Celeste, Baba Is You, Monument Valley): authored puzzles or stages that you clear one at a time. These are the most forgiving if you are interrupted.

If your free time is unpredictable, for example a parent who might be called away at any moment, levels and turn-based runs are the safer choice. If you know you have a full half-hour, real-time runs and matches open up.

Using suspend, sleep mode and cloud saves to stretch a session

Modern consoles make short play easier than the games themselves suggest. The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 go to sleep mid-game and resume where you left off. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S can also suspend a game in rest mode, and Xbox's Quick Resume can hold several games at once. On a phone, most games pick up where you left them.

Suspend is not a save, though. A power cut, an update or a crash can lose unsaved progress, so it is worth learning where each game saves automatically. Turn-based games such as Slay the Spire save between rooms; action runs usually do not save until the run ends.

If you switch between a console and a PC or phone, check whether the game supports cloud saves on both. Balatro, Stardew Valley and others are on many platforms, but saves do not always move between stores.

When short sessions are the wrong fit

Some games look bite-sized but punish stop-start play. Big open-world role-playing games, long story games and anything with complex controls tend to fall apart when you only play for 15 minutes every few days, because you forget the controls, the quest you were on or the plot.

If that is the only kind of game you really want, two tricks help. Keep a one-line note of what you were doing when you stopped. And pick games with a quest log or recap, which many story games include. Our story-rich picks flag the ones that are easier to dip into.

Competitive online games are another case. A match may be short, but ranked modes often penalise leaving early, and the pull to play "one more" can turn 20 minutes into two hours. If you want a firm stop, games with an offline mode or a clear end screen are easier to put down.

Matching short-session games to your platform

Portable devices are the natural home for short sessions. All ten picks here run on at least one handheld or phone, and most are on Switch. On iPhone, iPad and Android, Balatro, Vampire Survivors, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, Baba Is You and Monument Valley are all paid apps rather than free-to-play titles, which means no energy timers designed to bring you back.

On a TV, Rocket League and Hades II are the strongest fits: both are built around short, intense bursts that feel good with a controller. On PC, nearly all of them are available, and the Steam Deck and other PC handhelds blur the line further.

Not sure which way to go? The full game finder lets you filter by platform and session length together, and the Pathfinder on the home page narrows it down in four questions.

Questions people ask

What counts as a short session?

We use "short" for games whose core loop, a run, match, round or level, usually fits into roughly 10 to 30 minutes. It is an editorial grouping, not a measured figure, and it varies by player.

Are free-to-play mobile games good for short sessions?

Many are, but some use timers and daily rewards designed to bring you back at set times. The paid games listed here do not rely on that kind of design, which makes it easier to stop when you want to.

Can I play these on a Switch 2?

Where we list Switch 2, there is a Switch 2 version or edition on Nintendo's UK site. Nintendo says most Switch games also run on Switch 2, but check Nintendo's compatibility information for a specific game.

Which of these is the gentlest for a total beginner?

Monument Valley and Dorfromantik have no enemies or time pressure. Balatro is also turn-based, though it uses poker hands, and carries a PEGI 12 rating with a gambling descriptor.
