The shortlist

Each card shows platforms, the PEGI rating as published, typical session length, and which traits it shares.

  1. The Witness

    PEGI 3PCPS5XboxMedium sessions
    Editorial view

An island full of line-drawing puzzles that teach their own rules without any text. Each area introduces a new idea and then combines it with the others.

How it differs: It offers almost no story or explanation, which some players find isolating.

    • Shares 4 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  2. Baba Is You

    PEGI 3PCSwitchiPhoneiPadShort sessions
    Editorial view

Every level's rules are written as word blocks, such as BABA IS YOU or WALL IS STOP, and you solve puzzles by pushing the words around to rewrite them.

How it differs: Later puzzles become very hard, and there is no hint system in the game.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  3. Portal 2

    PEGI 12PCMedium sessions
    Editorial view

Physics puzzles built around placing two linked portals, with a witty script. A separate two-player campaign has puzzles that only work with two portal guns.

How it differs: Some later puzzles need quick reactions as well as thinking.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  4. Return of the Obra Dinn

    PEGI 16PCPS5XboxSwitchMedium sessions
    Editorial view

As an insurance investigator in 1807, you use a pocket watch that shows the moment of each death aboard a ghost ship, and must deduce the name and fate of all sixty people aboard.

How it differs: It is rated PEGI 16 for sustained depictions of death, and its monochrome look is an acquired taste.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  5. Outer Wilds

    PEGI 7PCPS5XboxSwitchMedium sessions
    Editorial view

A mystery spread across a small solar system in a 22-minute time loop. You keep nothing between loops except knowledge, so every breakthrough is a mental one.

How it differs: The loop adds time pressure that pure puzzle games do not have.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  6. Balatro

    PEGI 12PCPS5XboxSwitchSwitch 2iOSAndroidShort sessions
    Editorial view

Build a deck and use poker hands, card upgrades and joker cards to hit ever-higher score targets. Finding a combination that multiplies your score is the core thrill.

How it differs: Its PEGI 12 rating carries a gambling descriptor for its card and casino-style imagery, although no real money is involved.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  7. Slay the Spire

    PEGI 7PCPS5XboxSwitchiOSAndroidMedium sessions
    Editorial view

A deck-building game where enemies show their next move, so each turn is a puzzle in how to spend your energy and cards.

How it differs: Runs involve luck in which cards and relics you are offered.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  8. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2

    PEGI 3PCPS5XboxSwitchShort sessions
    Editorial view

Two falling-block puzzle games in one, with an adventure mode and head-to-head matches. Thinking a few pieces ahead is the whole game.

How it differs: It is fast and competitive rather than reflective.

    • Shares 1 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  9. Monument Valley

    PEGI 3iOSAndroidSwitchPS5Short sessions
    Editorial view

Rotate and slide impossible buildings to create paths, each level a short optical illusion. Rated PEGI 3, with very little text.

How it differs: It is gentle and short; experienced puzzle fans may finish it quickly.

    • Shares 3 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment
    • No clock
    • Fair solutions
  10. Dorfromantik

    PEGI 3PCSwitchShort sessions
    Editorial view

A tile-placement game where each hexagon must fit its neighbours, and small quests reward clever placement.

How it differs: It is relaxed planning rather than sharp 'aha' puzzles.

    • Shares 2 of 4
    • Rules you learn by doing
    • The aha moment

Four kinds of puzzle game, and how to tell which you like

"Puzzle game" covers very different experiences. It helps to know which of these you enjoy most:

  • Rule puzzles (The Witness, Baba Is You): you learn a system and apply it in ever cleverer ways.
  • Physics and spatial puzzles (Portal 2, Monument Valley): you manipulate a space to make a route.
  • Deduction (Return of the Obra Dinn, Outer Wilds): you gather clues and reason your way to the truth.
  • Systems and strategy (Balatro, Slay the Spire, Dorfromantik): each turn is a small optimisation problem, with some luck.

If you love crosswords and logic grids, deduction games are a natural step. If you prefer Rubik's cubes and mazes, start with spatial puzzles. Card and board-game fans tend to enjoy deck builders.

Getting unstuck without spoiling the puzzle

Being stuck is part of a good puzzle game, but being stuck for days is not fun. A few tactics help before you reach for a walkthrough:

  1. Walk away. Many players report solving puzzles away from the screen, after a break.
  2. Explain the puzzle out loud, to someone else or to yourself. Saying what you know often reveals what you have missed.
  3. Try a different puzzle. Most of these games let you skip around, and later puzzles often teach a trick that unlocks earlier ones.
  4. If you do look something up, search for a hint rather than a full solution, and stop reading as soon as you have the idea.

Games with a single right answer, such as Baba Is You and The Witness, are the ones where spoilers do the most harm.

Puzzles on the go: phones, handhelds and short breaks

Puzzle games are some of the best fits for phones and handhelds, because they work in short bursts and rarely need fast reactions. Baba Is You, Monument Valley, Balatro and Slay the Spire are all available as paid apps on phones. On Switch, nearly every game here is available.

Deduction games such as Return of the Obra Dinn and Outer Wilds are better on a bigger screen and in longer sittings, because you build up a picture in your head over time. A notebook helps with both.

For more ideas that fit around a busy day, see our short-session picks.

Puzzle games for families and younger players

Several of these are good family puzzles. Monument Valley and Dorfromantik are PEGI 3 with gentle pacing. The Witness and Baba Is You are also PEGI 3, though they are hard enough to challenge adults. Pikmin 4, from our play-with-kids list, mixes light puzzles into an adventure.

Some brain teasers carry higher ratings for reasons other than difficulty. Return of the Obra Dinn is PEGI 16 for its depictions of death, and Balatro is PEGI 12 with a gambling descriptor because of its poker-based design. PEGI's consumer advice explains each rating.

Solving a puzzle together, with one person on the controller and the others suggesting moves, can be as sociable as a board game.

From puzzles to bigger adventures

If you enjoy the thinking in these games, some larger adventures build puzzles into exploration. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom asks you to build contraptions and solve shrine puzzles across a huge world, and Outer Wilds bridges both moods.

Use the finder to combine "brain teasers" with "big adventures" or "short sessions", or let the Pathfinder on the home page suggest a mix.

Why a notebook is a puzzle player's best tool

The deeper puzzle games on this list reward keeping notes, and some are almost designed around it. Return of the Obra Dinn gives you a logbook to record names and fates, and it confirms your deductions only in groups of three correct answers, so random guessing does not get you far. Outer Wilds keeps a ship's log of the clues you have found, but players often find their own notes useful for joining the dots.

For rule-based games such as The Witness and Baba Is You, a quick sketch of a puzzle can help you think without staring at the screen. Taking a photo of a puzzle panel on your phone lets you think about it away from the console.

Notes also help across sessions. If you play in short bursts, a line or two on what you were trying when you stopped saves you from working it all out again. Puzzle games are one of the few genres where pen and paper still earns a place next to the controller.

Questions people ask

Which puzzle game is best to start with?

It depends on what you enjoy. Monument Valley is gentle and short; Portal 2 teaches its ideas clearly and has a strong script; The Witness and Baba Is You are deeper but harder.

Is Balatro gambling?

No real money is involved. PEGI gives it a gambling descriptor because its design is built on poker hands and casino-style imagery.

Do any of these have co-op?

Portal 2 has a separate two-player co-op campaign. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 has local and online multiplayer, mostly competitive.

Are these puzzle games timed?

Most are not. Outer Wilds runs in a 22-minute loop, and Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 involves falling pieces, but the others let you think as long as you like.
