Which Zelda are you trying to replace?

"Games like Zelda" means two different things. For some players it means the open-air freedom of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. For others it means the older formula: dungeons, keys, items that open new paths, and a top-down view. Both are covered here.

  • Open-air exploration: Immortals Fenyx Rising, Genshin Impact, Sable and Xenoblade Chronicles X.
  • Dungeons and items: Okami HD, Tunic and Oceanhorn.
  • Somewhere in between: Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

Climbing and gliding outside Nintendo

Climbing almost any surface and gliding off it is the single feature people miss most after Breath of the Wild. Immortals Fenyx Rising and Genshin Impact both copy it closely, with stamina meters and wings or gliders. Sable lets you climb freely too, and its hoverbike gives the same sense of crossing big distances.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and Kena use more traditional, marked climbing routes. That makes them feel more guided, which some players prefer. If you are on PlayStation, Xbox or PC and cannot play the Switch games, Immortals Fenyx Rising is the most direct alternative.

Puzzles, shrines and dungeon design

Zelda's puzzles reward experiments. Tears of the Kingdom in particular lets you build contraptions to solve problems in many ways. Few games offer that much freedom, but several have strong puzzle design.

Okami HD uses brush techniques that work a lot like Zelda items, unlocking paths and solving riddles. Tunic hides its secrets in its own instruction manual, and many puzzles only click once you understand the pages. Immortals Fenyx Rising has many short puzzle vaults that feel similar to shrines.

Ratings: Zelda's PEGI 12 compared

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are both PEGI 12 for violence in the PEGI database. Most picks here sit close to that. Immortals Fenyx Rising, Okami HD, Kena: Bridge of Spirits and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition are PEGI 12. Tunic and Oceanhorn are PEGI 7, and Sable is PEGI 3.

Two are higher. Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered is PEGI 16 for violence. Genshin Impact is PEGI 16 too, and PEGI's consumer advice explains why: following changes to PEGI's criteria that took effect in June 2026, the rating was updated because the game sells loot boxes or other paid random items. PEGI notes the game can still be played without buying them. That matters for families, so read our guide to choosing your next game for what the descriptors mean.

How long these adventures take to finish

Zelda's open-world games are long. If you want something you can actually finish, Oceanhorn and Sable are much shorter journeys, and Kena is a focused, mid-length adventure. Okami HD, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and Xenoblade Chronicles X are large, many-hour games.

Genshin Impact never truly ends because it is updated regularly. That suits people who want an ongoing world but can make it hard to stop. For more long journeys, see big adventures, or try games like Elden Ring for tougher open worlds.

Zelda-style adventures by platform, and a suggested order

Because the Zelda games are only on Nintendo hardware, platform is usually the deciding factor. PlayStation and Xbox owners should start with Immortals Fenyx Rising for the open-air feel, then try Okami HD for classic dungeon structure. PC players have almost every option here, including Tunic, Sable and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

Switch owners who have finished both open-world Zelda games might enjoy Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition next, as it is one of the largest worlds on the system. For a shorter, more classic adventure, Tunic or Oceanhorn fit well between bigger games. Genshin Impact is free to download, so it can be tried without buying anything, but read the note on paid random items above first.
