Games Like It Takes Two: 10 Co-op Games for Two Players

It Takes Two is built for exactly two people, constantly changes how you play and only needs one copy to share online with its Friend's Pass. These ten games share some of that DNA, from Hazelight's own follow-ups to chaotic co-op party games.

Built-for-two games are rare

Lots of games have co-op, but very few are designed only for two. That is what makes It Takes Two special. Hazelight Studios has made three of them: A Way Out, It Takes Two and Split Fiction. If you have finished It Takes Two, those are the natural next steps.

Biped and Unravel Two are also built around two players, though they are smaller. The rest of this list supports co-op without requiring it.

It Takes Two also stands out because both players matter equally. In many family co-op games, the second player is a helper who can drop in and out. That makes those games easier to share with a younger child, but less of a partnership. If you want the equal-partner feel, stick with Hazelight's games and Biped. If you want something a less experienced player can join without pressure, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Sackboy are better fits.

Friend's Pass: playing with one copy

It Takes Two's Friend's Pass lets one owner invite a friend to play online without buying the game. Split Fiction and A Way Out offer a similar pass. That makes Hazelight's games unusually cheap to try with a partner or friend. According to EA's help pages, online play on consoles still needs the platform's subscription (such as PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online) for both players, and if neither of you owns It Takes Two, the Friend's Pass lets you try the first level together.

Most other games on this list need a copy for each online player, or are local-only on one screen. Our try before you buy guide covers other ways to test games before paying.

Couch co-op versus online

It Takes Two works on one sofa or online. These picks vary.

  • On one screen: Unravel Two, Cuphead, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Biped are all good side-by-side.
  • Online and local: Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Moving Out 2 and Sackboy support both.
  • Story online: Split Fiction and A Way Out work with split-screen online.

See our couch co-op mood page for more.

Ratings next to It Takes Two's PEGI 12

It Takes Two is PEGI 12 in the PEGI database, for violence and bad language. Portal 2 is also PEGI 12. Unravel Two, Cuphead, Sackboy and Kirby and the Forgotten Land are PEGI 7, and Overcooked! All You Can Eat, Biped and Moving Out 2 are PEGI 3.

Hazelight's other games are higher: Split Fiction is PEGI 16 and A Way Out is PEGI 18. If you are playing with a child, the lower-rated picks are the better match, and our playing with kids page has more.

Choosing for couples, friends or families

For couples who loved the story, Split Fiction is the obvious next step. For friends who enjoy a challenge, Cuphead and Portal 2's co-op test teamwork. For families, Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Sackboy are gentle and bright, while Overcooked! and Moving Out 2 are loud and funny.

If you want group games for more than two, see games like Among Us.

Where to play these co-op games, and online requirements

It Takes Two is on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Switch 2, so most couples can play wherever they are. Split Fiction is listed for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, and EA says it supports crossplay with the Friend's Pass. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a Nintendo game, and Portal 2's co-op is verified here for PC only.

For online co-op on consoles, both players normally need the platform's online subscription. Local co-op on one screen does not need that. If you are setting up for a child, think about which mode you will use: sitting together on one sofa is often easier to supervise and more fun.
