Games Like Roblox: 8 Creative and Social Games to Try

Roblox is less a single game than a huge library of player-made experiences, plus the tools to make your own. The games below share parts of that DNA, from level editors to shared building worlds, and several are better suited to younger children.

What Roblox players are really looking for

When someone asks for games like Roblox, they usually mean one of three things: making games, playing lots of different mini-games with friends, or hanging out online. No single game covers all three, so it helps to know which matters most.

  • Making: Super Mario Maker 2, Game Builder Garage and Minecraft.
  • Variety: Fortnite's player-made islands and Fall Guys' creative rounds.
  • Hanging out: Minecraft servers and Fortnite.

The social side is often the hardest to replace. Many children use Roblox mainly to spend time with friends from school, and the specific experience matters less than who is there. In that case, the best alternative is simply whichever game their friends already play. If you are steering a child towards a different game, it helps to agree on it together with their friends' families, so the move does not cut them off from their group.

Creation tools for young game designers

Roblox Studio is a real game engine, and many young players start there. If you want a gentler or more structured introduction, Game Builder Garage teaches programming ideas step by step with visual nodes, and PEGI's description calls it an educational game development application. Super Mario Maker 2 is ideal for learning level design.

Minecraft's Creative mode and Fortnite's island creator also allow ambitious projects. For more creative games, use the finder and filter by the creative mood.

Another option for older children is to treat creation as a hobby beyond games. Learning the logic in Game Builder Garage or designing levels in Super Mario Maker 2 builds the same problem-solving skills that Roblox Studio uses, and it can be a gentle first step before moving on to more complex tools on a computer.

Parental Guidance: what PEGI says about user-generated games

Roblox has no PEGI age number. In the PEGI database it is rated Parental Guidance Recommended, because it contains a broad and unpredictable range of user-generated content. Fortnite as a platform has the same rating for the same reason.

Games built on fixed, developer-made content can carry normal ratings. Super Mario Maker 2, Fall Guys and Human Fall Flat are PEGI 3; Minecraft, Game Builder Garage and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey are PEGI 7; Toca Boca World shows PEGI 3 on Google Play UK. Any online play still involves other people, so set up chat and spending controls on each platform.

Recent changes: Rec Room has closed

Older lists of Roblox alternatives often include Rec Room, a social creation platform. Rec Room announced that it would shut down on 1 June 2026, so we have not included it. Live online games can close or change quickly, which is another reason to check the official page before buying in-game currency.

Platforms such as Fortnite and Roblox are also updated constantly, so features described on this page may change.

Free, paid and in-game spending

Roblox and Fortnite are free to start and earn money through in-game currency. Fall Guys is also free to play with optional purchases. Super Mario Maker 2, Game Builder Garage and Human Fall Flat are paid games with no need to spend more for the core experience. Toca Boca World offers optional paid content.

If you are choosing for a child, our playing with kids page and games like Minecraft page have more ideas.

Where to play these creative games

Roblox runs on PC, Xbox, phones and tablets, so many players use more than one device. Fortnite and Minecraft are similarly widespread. Several of the most child-friendly picks are Nintendo exclusives: Super Mario Maker 2 and Game Builder Garage are both Switch games, with Game Builder Garage also listed for Switch 2. Toca Boca World is mobile only.

If your child mainly wants to create, think about the device they will use. Building tools are easier with a mouse and keyboard or a touch screen, while Super Mario Maker 2 is designed around the Switch's controls and touch screen. The list below shows verified platforms.

  • PC: Minecraft, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Fall Guys, Human Fall Flat.
  • PlayStation: Minecraft, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Fall Guys, Human Fall Flat.
  • Xbox: Minecraft, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Fall Guys, Human Fall Flat.
  • Nintendo Switch / Switch 2: Minecraft, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Super Mario Maker 2, Game Builder Garage, Fall Guys, Human Fall Flat.
  • Mobile: Minecraft, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, Toca Boca World.
Platforms are taken from the PEGI database and official store listings checked on 3 November 2026. A game may also be available on platforms not listed here.
