Bethesda's other worlds

The nearest thing to more Skyrim is another Bethesda game. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered brings the previous Elder Scrolls game up to modern standards; the PEGI database lists it for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from April 2025. It shares the guilds, freedom and first-person exploration.

Fallout 4 and Starfield use the same structure in science-fiction settings. Fallout 4 is closest in feel, with one open map to wander. Starfield spreads its world across many planets, which some players love and others find less immersive.

Skyrim's dragons and shouts are hard to replace, but the deeper hook is the freedom to ignore the main quest entirely. The best follow-ups respect that, letting you wander off, take odd jobs and come back to the story whenever you like. Bethesda's games and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II do this best; Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 are more guided.

Grounded realism versus high fantasy

If you loved Skyrim's sense of living in a world, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a strong choice. It is set in medieval Bohemia with no magic, and it pays a lot of attention to everyday detail. It is also more demanding: combat takes practice, and your clothes and reputation affect how people react.

For pure fantasy, Avowed, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and Dragon's Dogma 2 all offer spells and monsters. Avowed is the most similar in first-person feel.

Freedom to build any character

Skyrim's skill system rewards whatever you do. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II works similarly, as skills improve through use. Kingdoms of Amalur lets you mix three skill trees freely, and Avowed lets you combine weapons and magic in each hand.

Elden Ring also gives huge build freedom, but its challenge is a different kind of commitment. See games like Elden Ring if you want that harder path.

Factions are another part of Skyrim's freedom. Joining a guild gives you a separate story with its own ending, and you can belong to several at once. Oblivion Remastered has the same structure, with guild questlines in Cyrodiil. Fallout 4 and Starfield also offer factions you can side with, though in Fallout 4 some of those choices shut off others. If guild life was your favourite part of Skyrim, Bethesda's own games remain the best fit, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance II focuses on one character's personal story instead.

Ratings: most picks are PEGI 18

Skyrim is PEGI 18 for violence in the PEGI database, and the Anniversary Edition adds an In-game purchases descriptor. Oblivion Remastered, Fallout 4, Starfield, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, The Outer Worlds 2, Kingdoms of Amalur, Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dragon's Dogma 2 are also PEGI 18.

Avowed and Elden Ring are PEGI 16. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II also carries a Drugs descriptor. This page is aimed at adult players; families may prefer games like Zelda, where most picks are PEGI 7 to 12.

How much time to set aside

Every game here is long. Skyrim's appeal is partly that it never really ends, and Bethesda's games share that open-endedness. Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 are more focused, with clearer endings. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Dragon Age: Inquisition are very long.

Where to play these RPGs, and modding notes

Skyrim's long life owes a lot to mods. On this list, Fallout 4 also has mod support on PC and consoles, and Starfield supports community creations too. Most other picks have more limited or PC-only modding, so if mods are important to you, PC is the platform to choose.

Console players should note that Starfield is listed for Xbox Series X|S and PC in the PEGI database, while Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is one of the few picks also on Nintendo Switch. Platforms below come from PEGI and Steam listings.
