Why Fortnite is rated differently from its modes
In the PEGI database, Fortnite as a whole is rated Parental Guidance Recommended, with no age number. PEGI explains that this is because Fortnite is now a platform containing a wide range of user-generated content that may not suit younger children. Epic's own modes are rated separately: Fortnite Battle Royale is PEGI 12, Fortnite Festival is PEGI 12 and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey is PEGI 7.
So when someone asks "what age is Fortnite?", the answer depends on what they are playing. The same applies to many alternatives here, which is why we list each rating separately.
Battle royales with a different feel
If the drop-loot-survive loop is what you love, Apex Legends and PUBG: Battlegrounds are the most direct alternatives. Apex adds hero abilities and quick movement in squads of three. PUBG is slower and more tactical, with realistic weapons. Neither has Fortnite's building, and both are PEGI 16 in the PEGI database.
Fall Guys is the battle royale idea with no violence at all: rounds of obstacle courses until one player is left. It is PEGI 3, which makes it a popular choice for younger players who want something similar to Fortnite.
Building is the one feature that is hard to find elsewhere. Fortnite's quick construction during fights is unusual in competitive games, and none of the battle royales above include it. Players who mainly enjoyed building may find more to like in creative games than in other shooters: our games like Minecraft page and LEGO Fortnite Odyssey, which is part of Fortnite itself, focus on construction rather than combat. Fortnite also offers a no-build mode, so some players simply prefer to switch modes rather than games.
Team games with the same bright energy
Not every Fortnite fan wants another battle royale. Splatoon 3 keeps the colourful, competitive team play in a PEGI 7 package where the weapons shoot ink. Rocket League swaps guns for cars and a ball, and is PEGI 3. Overwatch and Valorant are team shooters with heroes and abilities, but both are PEGI 16.

Free-to-play costs and PEGI's 2026 loot box changes
Most games here are free to start, and they make money from cosmetics, battle passes and sometimes randomised items. PEGI changed its rating criteria in June 2026 so that games containing paid random items, such as loot boxes, receive a higher rating. That is why some free-to-play games now show PEGI 16; Overwatch's current PC listing, for example, cites the ability to buy loot boxes.
Ratings for live-service games can change after updates, so check pegi.info or the store listing when you decide. Our guide to trying before you buy explains how to test games without spending.
Picking a Fortnite alternative for a younger player
For younger players, the lower-rated choices are Fall Guys and Rocket League (both PEGI 3) and Splatoon 3 (PEGI 7). They keep the competitive, social feel without realistic violence.
Online games also involve chat and spending, which a PEGI number does not fully cover, so use console family settings for voice chat and purchases. Our play with kids page and games like Roblox page cover more family options.
It can also help to agree a plan before switching games. Many children play Fortnite because their friends do, so a new game works best when the whole group moves together. Trying a free option such as Fall Guys or Rocket League for a week is a low-risk way to see whether it sticks.
Where to play these games, and checking ratings yourself
Fortnite is on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, iOS and Android in the UK, so most players will want something available on the same device. Apex Legends and Fall Guys are on the widest range of platforms here. Splatoon 3 is a Nintendo game, Brawl Stars is mobile only, and we verified Overwatch and Valorant on PC.
Because live-service games change often, we recommend checking ratings yourself before buying. Search the game on pegi.info and read the consumer advice, which explains exactly why a rating was given. On mobile, check the content rating near the top of the Google Play or App Store listing, and remember that these can differ between stores.
